Janis Joplin, in a televised performance with Tom Jones in April 1969. Original photo taken by Leigh Weiner (excerpt)

I walked through a mall today, and a song by Janis Joplin started to play. Isn’t it time again that women in music can sing? My oh my, she was something. It is too bad that she lived so recklessly. But in music, who can hold a candle to her? Ladies, please show your gifts… We need good and real music in our time.

The time for the fake and cheap and that heavy breathing nonsense into the microphone is so over.

Great timing, since it occurred on Etta James’ day of birth. Janis Joplin is Etta James’ musical daughter. Without Etta, there would be no Janis.
